Things that make you go EU
Those of us who are blindly adrift in the see of reality may not have noticed recent European events. Like, the French voting "non" in their referendum on the EU Constitution, The Netherlands doing the exact same thing, or now this. Some Italians want to drop the Euro and go back to the Lira. How's that for a vote of confidence, M. Chirac?
Luxembourg's "no" vote is gaining momentum too. If anybody sees the rats leaving the ship, please drop M. Chirac a line, would ya?
Seriously, can you blame them? I'd vote no too if it meant passing sovereignty to a bunch of unaccountable foreign bureaurats who are difficult to remove from office. Why don't they all bend over and get screwed quickly? It really offends me that the public referendums may not matter, that the final word is for the legislative bodies. It seems to me that if you put it to a referendum, you are giving the people their voice. If you then say, "you got to speak, but even the majority opinion doesn't matter", seems to me your people aren't free. They don't have any control of their own government. I'd be fomenting rebellion and revolution.
Of course, they'll have to fight with loaves of bread and rocks. Not a lot of freedoms there to take back your government, if you know what I mean. Except the Swiss, maybe. I think the Swiss are allowed to own weapons.
