You may have missed it, what with the practical MSM blackout on the topic (the MSM just sort of ignores the news they don't like these days), but there has been a bit of a development in the case of those Marines accused of killing Iraqi civilians in Haditha.
You may recall the case as these are the Marines that John Murtha ((D)ickhead - Pennsylvania) rushed to judgement on their guilt. These are the marines whom Murtha didn't just accuse, but convicted. He said that they had, "killed innocent civilians in cold blood." He was noisy, boisterous, and made a big splash slandering these Marines all over the MSM.
But now it seems, much as we suspected, that it wasn't exactly as Murtha would have you believe.A Marine investigator is now recommending dropping the charges. In fact, in his report, Lt. Col. Paul Ware claims that the murder theory posited was based on conflicting and contradictory reports from Iraqis. Here is the money quote:
"To believe the government version of facts is to disregard clear and convincing evidence to the contrary, and sets a dangerous precedent that, in my opinion, may encourage others to bear false witness against Marines as a tactic to erode public support of the Marine Corps and mission in Iraq," Ware wrote.
So there you go. Of course, this isn't dead until the commanding general makes the final decision, but any day you can defend a Marine against spurious charges, you should.
I, too, am beginning to wonder if this country isn't going to politically-correct itself to death.
What the hell good are those civil liberties if we are all dead in a burning ditch, I ask you? Does nobody know the Preamble? What about that "Provide for the common defense" bit? Huh?
Congress needs to act and make this program legal. Fuckitall, I don't want September 11th to happen again, thank you everso, so I'm for whatever tools let us know what the bad guys are planning.
And yes, it really is that simple for me. Anybody who wants to commit the mass murder of civilians is a bad guy and, in my book, not worthy of oxygen. However, I'll buy the bullet that sends him on his merry way. I wouldn't want to stand between him and his hot date with a horde of virgins...
I worry sometimes about the hearts of our troops. We talk an awful lot about winning the "hearts and minds" of the Iraqis, but few seem to consider the hearts and minds of our own troops serving in our name.
How disheartening it must be to listen to the blather of Cindy Sheehan, Murtha, Kerry, the New York Times, Howeird Dean, Harry Reid, and the other idiots of the left. On one hand, they are losing the war and on the other they are committing atrocities against the innocent.
I, for one, am sick of it. I have faith in little in this world, but one thing I do trust is the men and women serving in our armed forces. They are professionals and deserve more than the treatment they get from most.
If I could send each and every man and woman deployed a big box of cookies, I would. You can bet I'd even go out of my way to make them their favorite cookies too. I don't know why they get the abuse that they do, but I for one respect, admire, appreciate, and love them.
Your elected officials in Congress have been huffing and puffing enough to blow the house down over the fact that the FBI executed a search warrant on Jefferson Clinton (Democrat - Louisiana), the US Representative under investigation for taking bribes.
Mr. Clinton, you see, failed to respond to a federal subpoena, so the Justice Department played one of the bigger cards in its hand. They searched Mr. Clinton's office and home with a legal warrant issued by a judge. (And, they found cold hard cash stashed in his freezer that traces back to a bribe.)
Ah, but you see, the Wicked Witch of the East, Nancy Pelosi, and House Speaker Dennis Hastert took umbrage at this display of FBI power as it is "unconstitutional" - except it really isn't. It may be contrary to custom, but it is not unconstitutional, yet another example of how our elected officials are unfamiliar with the document that guides this country.
But, here is why I am upset.
It makes clear, now, that there are special classes of people here in the USA that are above the law. The first group: illegal aliens. Clearly, the Senate feels that these people are not subject to existing immigration laws, identity theft measures, or fraud laws. The second group: US Senators and Representatives, who are apparently above subpoenas and warrants.
No man is above the law in this country. Or, at least they aren't supposed to be. The days of droit du seigneur are supposed to be over, but this American Citizen still feels like she is getting screwed.
Mr. Clinton failed to heed a federal subpoena. Do you have any idea what would happen to you or me if we did that? Should we not, as American Citizens, be able to expect that our own elected officials will follow the law and comply with federal investigations that suggest that some entity has been exerting unfair and illegal pressure on our legislature? Do we not have a right to make sure that our representation in Congress is, if nothing else, free from the taint of bribery? I certainly think so.
This country was founded on the ideals of equality under the law. No exceptions. If you are here, you are subject to the law. And the law says, no bribe-taking, or making. Moreover, it is incumbent on the American Citizen to have an active hand in our government. That is what "We the People" is all about. It is our government.
Our Representatives and Senators serve at our pleasure.
That means you and me. We have a right to expect that our views will weigh more heavily with our elected officials than somebody with a deep pocket.
This is the way it is supposed to be.
And I get a very red ass over elected officials whimpering, whining, and braying that Executive Power is out of control. You want out of control? Try a guy selling votes on for size. You don't get to ignore legal warrants and subpoenas in this land, I don't care who you are. Get over yourselves. Not only are we your boss, but we also own the office that was searched. You can't expect any special protection in this space. Not from the American Citizen.
So, it appears that our elected Legislature has abdicated their responsibility for the law. Ironic, doncha think?
Invitation to those in an uproar over those cartoons:
Go Piss Up a Rope.
Clearly, you understand protests, the burning of flags, and the attacking of people and buildings. However, your blatant disregard for other people's views is very unattractive and disingenuous. You don't get a double standard. You don't get to do and say what you want but limit the actions and views of others. It just don't work that way. Not even in Mesopotamia.
So, again, I cordially invite you to collectively Go Piss Up a Rope.
I'm done with this brouhaha and am now choosing sides. Courtesy of The Noble Eagle (blog papa) and Cox & Forkum, I give you the following very scary images:
That's so inflammatory -- I am feeling the urge to torch something! (extra sarcasm, for your edification)
A while back, I posted a rebuttal of sorts to the notion of introducing Pleistocene Park to the Great Plains and Southwest. The particular animals nominated for introduction included cheetahs, lions, camels, and elephants.
In all fairness, the whole idea got me pretty riled up. You can read the original post here. Cox & Forkum posted a particularly humorous cartoon that backed up my concerns, which you can view here. A few days after my original post, I stumbled across a news item that also served as support for my argument. But now? Now I have another case in point:
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - Lions disturbed by deforestation have killed 20 people and devoured 750 of their domestic animals in Ethiopia, a local news agency said on Tuesday.
The rare daylight attacks, all during August and in the remote south, have forced a thousand peasant farmers to flee their homes and sparked a hunt for the lions, local official Tadesse Gichore told Walta Information Service.
“The lions killed shepherds tending cattle and villagers after breaking into their houses,” Tadesse said of the attacks near his Soro district some 300 miles south of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
This from the fellows at Cox & Forkum. It was too good not to post here, considering my many recent posts on the issue. Oh, and The Maximum Leader also weighs in on the topic, declaring it not to be the stupidest idea ever, just in the running for the title. Fair enough.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. military said Tuesday it has seized a letter from Iraqi insurgents believed to be intended for Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi complaining about low morale among followers and weakening support for the insurgency.
Low morale? Ain't that a pisser? Oh, boo-hoo. Da poo' wittle baby tewowists. Eveebuddy feel bad for vem.
The authenticity of the letter -- which the military said American troops found Thursday in a raid in Baghdad -- could not be independently verified.
I find this statement to be incredibly stupid. Well, no shit, Sherlock! Anybody who came forward to verify it would be identifying himself as a terrorist. It is hard to carry out homicide attacks if the US military is all over your ass like white on rice.
The letter -- which never refers to al-Zarqawi by name -- is written to Sheik Abu Ahmad, a name not known to be used by the militant leader or his followers. But supporters often call al-Zarqawi the Sheik or Sheik Abu Musab in letters and on Web sites.
"What has happened to myself and my brothers is an unforgivable crime, but God will punish the oppressor," the letter reads. "I swear by God that you will be asked about what happened to us because you have not asked about the situation of the migrants. Morale is down and there is fatigue among mujahedeen ranks.
Egads! Fatigue and low morale? Sounds like Zarqawi is a piss-poor leader. Where are the pep talks? Maybe a little mustache-growing campaign so everybody feels like part of the group would help. Sounds like the letter was written by one of those "migrants." It certainly reads like a veiled threat.
"There is discrimination by some of the brethren emirs. God would not accept such actions, and a simple mistake delays victory, so what about big mistakes and gross guilts? Many underestimate them and are lenient toward them."
Discrimination too? I am OUTRAGED! Outraged, I tell you. Those poor suffering mujahedeen bastards.
The letter is dated April 27, the military said.
The author of the letter also "admonishes 'the Sheik' for abandoning his followers" after last year's U.S. siege on Falluja, west of Baghdad.
U.S. forces led an assault then on the Sunni Triangle city's terrorist network believed to be run by al-Zarqawi.
Because of the "continuous pressure by Iraqi and [U.S.-led] coalition forces," a military statement said, al-Zarqawi has relied on his cell leaders to conduct operations while he is forced to evade being killed or captured.
"I'd really like to do more, but I've constantly got to stay 30 minutes ahead of the infidel. They chase me like I am a bad guy! Do they not understand we are supposed to win? You'll just have to carry on the roadside bombings without me, I have executive duck-and-cover ops to run."
Pentagon officials said last week that U.S. troops nearly caught al-Zarqawi in February after receiving a tip that he might be traveling to Ramadi, west of Falluja.
The author of the letter, the military said, is a member of the terrorist group known as al Qaeda in Iraq.
The author's name is Abu Asim al-Qusaymi al-Yemeni, the military statement said.
Zarqawi just put this idiot on the top of the suicide attack volunteer list.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the letter reflects "a certain amount of proof that [al-Zarqawi's] influence and effectiveness is deteriorating."
Villains Vanquished would like to take this moment to wish Saddam Hussein, ex-President of Iraq, a very Happy Birthday today.
We hope your prison cell is tidy and that you get better treatment than your own prisoners did. Certainly a murderous degenerate like yourself deserves a birthday wish, so you can take your pick today of a raping, a trip through the wood-chipper of hell, or the mutilation of the body part of your choice. We know you are homesick for the good ol' days, so maybe this will make you feel better.
And I'm telling you all right now. I don't give a red hot damn what the FEC dictates. As an American I am entitled to my thoughts and opinions without any bureaucratic interference.
They are welcome to come and get me. I will make it my life's mission to bring down their jackbooted idiocy if it takes me 100 years. What they are proposing is wrong. Flat. Out. Wrong.
